Yerevan Botanical Garden

The Yerevan Botanical Garden is a scientific, eco-educational, educational and recreational facility included in the Institute of Botany, the main purpose of which is the importation of highly decorative and economically valuable plant species from different phytogeographical regions of the Earth, the creation of demonstrative scientific collections, the discovery of their adaptability to new ecological conditions, the most adapted species contribution to greening of cities and settlements.

It was founded in 1935 by famous scientists A.K. Maghakyan, A.A. Hakhverdov and N.V. by Mirzoeva. A number of interesting species from the botanic-geographical point of view, as well as wild medicinal, economically valuable, ornamental and many other species are presented in various exhibition booths of the plot in the area of the botanical garden. In addition, about 200 species of wild relatives of cultivated plants of Armenia (from 30 genera) are presented in the collection plot: legumes, legumes, vegetables, berries, spices, etc. The rich and diverse plant collections created in the park located in the semi-desert zone of Yerevan serve as a training base for the students of the educational institutions of the republic, primarily universities. The park is also a unique recreation center for the population of the capital and the republic.

A number of rare and endangered plant species are also presented here. Among the rare species grown on the plot are:

  • Galanthus alpinus
  • Centaurea erivanensis
  • Astragalus paradoxus
  • Onobrychis hajastana
  • Ribes armenum
  • Iris elegantissima
  • Iris grossheimii
  • Triticum araraticum
  • Triticum urart

Zelkova carpinifolia 16 models (artificial coenoses) of plant coexistences of Armenia have been created in the area of about 4 ha of land, among which there are also those groups that are on the verge of extinction in nature (sands, aghuts, hammada, shiblyak, wetland coenoses, etc.). The creation of scientific collections of the mentioned group of plant species in botanical gardens and the identification of their ecological adaptation in ex situ conditions has extremely important scientific and practical significance. In recent years, the arboreal collections of the botanical garden, the tropical and subtropical plant fund (around 30 species), and the flower plants have been enriched with 12 new beautiful names.

The area of about 1 ha near the collection rose garden was improved and decorated, where more than 1000 trees representing 40 names were planted, most of them partisan forms. Until 1992, there was a greenhouse in Yerevan Botanical Garden, where 1260 species of tropical and subtropical plants were represented. Now the number of assortment reaches 300. On the territory of the botanical garden is also the paleobotanical museum, which was founded in 2008 with the help of the German-Armenian project of the Volkswagen Foundation. Here, the biodiversity of fossil plants in Armenia is shown, represented by specimens of maples, oaks and poplars, as well as the great variety of sizes and shapes of modern sycamore leaves. And finally, we would like to inform you that our Rubinyants Complex premium residential complex will be built next to the Botanical Garden, which will not only not harm nature, but will also contribute to its development, because it is fundamental for us to contribute to the development and preservation of the environment when implementing projects.
